The word "blissful" always suggests to me the expression of a cat who has given birth to her kittens.

Tippy was a sweet kitten born with 12 heart defects. His heart was only able to serve him for 10 months. His life was too short, but he had a good time while it lasted.

Roulette

Pretty Kitty Roulette

Roulette was a feral kitten who huddled in a dryer vent of a laundromat for warmth. The people that found her thought she was too mean to ever be adoptable. She was so beautiful that people wanted to adopt her even though she wasn't too friendly. Eventually she was adopted, but she was returned a couple of months later on Thanksgiving night because she was "anti-social". Roulette lived the rest of her life with her foster mom and dad who adopted her. She turned into a sweet loving kitty.

We miss you, Roulette - June 21, 2019

Marvin

Marvin

We saw Marvin's photo through petfinder, instantly fell in love, and brought him home from the shelter in 2011. At first we were a little bit nervous about tending to a deaf cat's needs, but Marvin proved wrong all of our assumptions. He was the most sociable cat we ever met, even greeting people at the door and actively supervising visitors who performed home repairs. Marvin passed away from cancer today, and we wanted to honor his memory. Our hearts are broken for the lovable cat who brought us and anyone who crossed our threshold so much joy these past 7 years.

Stassi

Stassi

Our beautiful Stassi girl went to be with her big brother Rupert shortly before Thanksgiving this year. At the young age of 7, Stassi was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Despite a poor prognosis, Stassi was a strong girl and put up a fight to spend as much time with her loving family as she could. Stassi was one of a kind. We will always miss our conversations(she was a very vocal girl!), snuggle time and all of her quirks. She was perfectly, imperfect. Stassi was always our angel while on this earth and continues to be. Stassi leaves behind her younger sister, Buffy and brother, Will. We cannot thank Whiskers enough for giving our girl a chance. She brought so much joy to our lives. We all miss her very much and always will. Rest in peace Stassi, we love you so much.

Joletta

I adopted Joletta from whiskers about two years ago. She was such a sweetheart but was having a tough time finding a home due to her older age, and the fact she was a little “feisty” (as her adoption form stated). Once she was in her forever home, the feisty cat turned into my constant cuddly companion who was never more than an arm’s length away from me. I am grateful to Whiskers for our perfect match up. Our time together was short but it was wonderful and I would not have changed a thing. Miss you dearly, Jo.

Silkie

This was her favorite spot to sit!

Silkie, the Queen of the Dillon household, took her last breath with us on March 18th, 2016 at 5:41 pm. We were blessed to have her for 17 years, and we will all miss her very much. We got her from Whiskers at 3 years old after her first family couldn't keep her, and ever since then she stole our hearts. She loved to hang in the kitchen with mom when shed cook dinner, lay in the sunlight, and steal some treats whenever she could. She was famous for her incredibly loud meow, getting locked in the pantry because shed fall asleep in there, and laying ONLY on your left leg if she were to lay on your lap. 20 years total, and 17 years wasn't enough for us. your took a piece of our hearts with you, kitty. We love you little girl

ET

relaxing on the deck

October 17, 2015 our precious girl, ET, crossed over the rainbow bridge. She come to us from a friend who got her through Whiskers. Her Whiskers name was Chloe and we were told when she was found she had a kitten. The kitten was healthy, but she was not. Whiskers took care of her and her kitten. She shared life with us for 13 years. From her obnoxious meows to her heart warming purrs, we loved her! She was our constant companion no matter what room of the house we were in. When we had company, she always lovingly greeted them. Forever in our hearts.

Harley

In Loving Memory of Harley

Harley, a stunningly handsome green-eyed tiger, was only 7 years young when he passed away unexpectedly on Father's Day. When he was a small kitten, he was found foraging for food behind a Hannaford and taken in by Whiskers. He was such an adorable boy, it didn't take long for him to find his new dad who hoped he would be a good companion for his older cat, Calvin. It took Calvin quite a while to forgive this transgression, but Harley grew on him over time and was his buddy of sorts until Calvin passed away. For the next two years it was just Harley and his dad. They should have had many more years together. We are so sorry he's gone.

Desiree

Young Desi

Desiree was a whiskers cat, adopted in 2000. I was a shelter volunteer, and spent a lot of time there. Desiree was sick with a respiratory infection, that nobody could get to the bottom of. She wasn't adoptable at that time. There was security in knowing she would always be there when I showed up. Then one day I volunteered at an adoption clinic. Low and behold, there she was. Though I was not looking to adopt a second cat, there was no way I could say goodbye to her and watch someone else walk away with her. No chance. And so it was decided. 15 years later, today was a tearful goodbye. Desiree was almost 20. She is the sweetest soul ever, and was loved even by non-cat lovers. We will miss her so much.

In loving memory of Jackson

Jackson was Nick's cat. He was adopted as a kitten and for 17 years lived his full circle of life with Nick. As Jackson became a senior cat with multiple needs, their relationship was wonderful to watch. Jackson would give looks of gratitude and understanding you don't usually see in a cat. There was a real give and take of caregiving and understanding. How fortunate for a cat to have a loving owner, and more importantly.....how fortunate for an owner to have a loving cat.

Gracie

In Memory of a Very Special Gracie

In May of this year Dan and I lost one of our special “kids”, Gracie. Gracie came to us from the local humane society in July of 2009. She was found on the streets with very badly infected eyes and it was necessary for the shelter to surgically remove them before placing her up for adoption. Upon adoption we were told she was probably 2 years old although since then we have been told by vets she was most likely much older. The shelter had named her Wonder but upon meeting her for the first time Dan said her name should be Grace, because she was amazing. Gracie was a special girl and fearless although she couldn’t see. She could do anything the other cats in the household could do and navigated around with ease. People who came to our house found it almost impossible to believe that she couldn’t see; she would look right at them and was quite accurate as she nipped them (and us also). :-) Although the shelter had assessed her personality as warm and affectionate she never quite lived up to that. Everything was done under her own terms but she adored Dan and showed him the most affection. Gracie was very independent but her favorite place to sit was between us on the couch. She loved to sleep on the bed and play with toys that made noise. She could navigate the stairs to the cellar with unbelievable ease. We even had to construct a barrier along the stairs because she would just stop midway down and jump over the edge. A few years ago she developed trouble with walking and after numerous visits to vets and specialists it was thought that she had a spinal tumor. It was never really determined because the specialist said that Gracie was a poor candidate for surgery even if it was operable and he wasn’t willing to work with her. Let’s just say that she wasn’t cooperative with anyone who examined her (including us). For a few years Gracie did well with steroid shots but eventually the disease won out. Losing her was one of the hardest days of my life; we loved her very much and had made sure that her life was as easy as we could make it even after she lost the use of her legs. We still think of her every day and that space on the couch reminds us every day of the great life that was lost. We are grateful for the time we had with her; she taught us so much about determination and overcoming insurmountable odds. We miss and love you so Gracie!

Olivia

In Loving Memory of Olivia

Over 8 years ago some dear friends of mine came to the shelter looking for two cats to complete their family. After meeting all the cats at our wonderful shelter it seemed that two had selected them. Grayson, a mischievous boy and shy, sweet Honey had decided that they would love to accompany them home. Well, that day changed all their lives and they have lived as a very happy family since that day. Unfortunately, for some time Olivia (formerly known as Honey at Whiskers shelter) has been experiencing some health problems and today she passed to the rainbow bridge. I know that Gary and Barb’s hearts are broken and I’m sure Grayson misses his sister. Although we are all saddened by her passing, I take comfort in knowing that she lived a happy life and was very much loved. My sincere condolences to Olivia’s family and, as a member of Whiskers, I want you to know that we all share in your sadness. Those of us that knew her at the shelter have fond memories of her and were elated when she found a loving home with you. She was one of the gentlest and loving cats I've every met and I'm happy I got to be a part of her life for so long through all the pictures and stories you shared with me.

With deepest sympathy, Mary Lou and Dan - August 26, 2014

Brass

Our beloved Brass, whom we adopted with his brother from Whiskers shortly after moving into our house in December, 1997, today joins Copper and Frosty on the Rainbow Bridge. Brass was our sweet "lap" kitty, always wanting to be on a lap when we sat down. For 17 years, he was our faithful friend and companion, and we will miss him terribly. We know he is now romping happily with his kitty friends, something his heart failure will no longer prevent. Rest in peace, beautiful boy.

Lily

Sweet Sweet Lily

Lily was only 7 weeks old when she came to live with me. I adopted her from the local animal shelter. She lived to be 16 years old. She was loving yet could be independent. She always wanted to sit by me, but not always on my lap. If she wanted to she did, but it had to be her idea. She was always so healthy but she went in for a routine exam and by accident I found out she had breast cancer. From the time I found out until I had to take her back was about two precious months. Lily was so trusting of everything I had to do for her. She sat by me whenever I was there and she insisted on holding hands with me or even my grandchildren when she sat by them. It was so touching. She got so thin it was hard for her to jump up on anything anymore so I had pillows everywhere for her to climb up on her favorite spaces. The last night I slept with her on the spare bed and she was so happy to have me there all night with her. The next day I took her back to the vet carrying her in a blanket. She only weighed about 5 pounds at this point. We sat in the room waiting for the Dr. and she took her frail little paw and actually wrapped it right around my finger. She was peaceful in the room and then I said goodbye. I miss her every day and I believe she led me to Poppy, my cat I adopted from Whiskers a few months ago. I know Lily is with her sister Rosie now who I also loved for 13 years. One day I hope to see them again and I know Lily will be the first one to take my hand. Love you sweet girl....

Checkers

Checkers was my first "furbaby." I was 10 years old when my family adopted her. We grew up together. Checkers was such a sweet and loving kitty. She used to let me pull her around on a sled in the winter and push her around in my Fisher Price shopping cart in the summer. I know of no other cat that would put up with my constant mauling her with kisses and hugs. She was a wonderful kitty and will always be in my heart. I love you Checky!

Ivan

Ivan

Ivan, you were the amazing cat of my sister -- you and your sister Nadia, who died a few years ago. You lived way beyond anyone's expectations, especially the past several years. But, the last time I saw you, you were still meowing, purring, eating and getting around. You are part of over 20 years of memories in our family. Right from the funny discovery that you were Nadia's sister, not her brother ... your moves from the east cost to the south west and back again. We even saw the addition of a dog and a child to your household during all this time. We will always miss you Ivan.

Ali

Ali, you were the soft spoken of the two cats at your home. Your "brother," Semme was always at the door, meowing at me when I came to take care you both. You would emerge later, silent, but soft and loving. Very handsome. You seemed to stay well for quite a while with your illness, but in the end you had to leave us. I'm sure your brother will still be very outgoing and talkative when I come over, but I will always be looking past him to see if you are coming out to say hi. I know your mom is missing you.

Annie

Annie

Annie was the sister of Ralph and Merlin (see other post, below). At first I admit I was a little nervous about giving her the medication she needed... she was not too pleased with getting meds! Over time, though, she let me pet her and the last couple of times I took care of her and her brothers, she met me right at the door and led me right to her food dish! She was pretty small and frail when I got to know her, but I have a special place in my heart for these kitties. I felt honored that she warmed up to me. I will always see you greeting me at the door in my mind's eye, Annie.

Ralph and Merlin

Ralph and Merlin

I first met Ralph (red) & Merlin (silver)(and Annie, see another post) when their sitter couldn't make it because of a snow storm ... I filled in for her. They were interested to see me! They were all litter mates, and even though this photo is of them as kittens, they did grow up and keep each other company. Each one was a character! Ralph would jump on the counter to wait impatiently for me to get his food ready, and he would eat in one special spot there. Merlin was kind of conflicted -- he wanted to get attention, but he was a little worried and would run away. I was supposed to give him some pills ... but he found the one hiding place I could not get him out of. He would dive in between the basement steps into a crawlspace behind the stair case. There were no other entrances to this space, so I was sunk! Smart guy. Ralph used to get insulin, and he was always very good about his shots. The three of them all left us in a short span of time in under one year. I can't imagine their home without them.

Rowdy and Noire

Rowdy and Noire

Rowdy and Noire left us in the same year -- very sad. Their mom said this is kind of an old photo of them, as Rowdy was only a kitten when it was taken. He did grow up to be a big boy! At first glance, when they were both adults, they looked like twins. But, when I met Rowdy, as his cat sitter, he had a medical problem ... possibly an inner ear issue or maybe even a brain tumor. It caused him to walk with his head tilted ... he kept right on trying to do all the things he used to do, like run and jump. Noire was smaller than him, and she had some health issues later in life and needed to gain some weight. Of course, she ate very very slowly and Rowdy wanted to eat everything in sight, right away! They kept me or my employees busy at meal time! Their food was in a large jar with a screw-on lid that had to be kept in a high cabinet in the kitchen, as their mom said they figured out how to open the jar! We miss you two!

Diego

Diego

I came to take care of Diego in his older years, after he had been diagnosed with heart problems. He needed pills every day, and I have to say, he was a master at pretending he had swallowed those pills ... At first, Diego used to hide on me. I even had to call him mom up one time because I absolutely could not find him anywhere in the house. She said "Oh, I bet he's behind the office desk ... squeezed in between the back of the file drawers and the wall," and indeed, that's where he was. This year, he decided he would be friends with me after all. I'd come in the house and he would come into the kitchen to eat, he would meow at me, and purr and purr. I really felt honored when he decided I was "OK" after all. Diego, I will always see you in your spot on the sofa and I will probably find myself putting a dish of food up on your special table for your breakfast. I will miss you, big guy!

Zoe

Zoe

Zoe lived with 8 other cats in her home. I have notes in my cat sitting files that Zoe loves people, but does not love cats. When I would go cat sit at Zoe's house I thought I saw everyone, and I did eventually learn who was who. Then, Zoe needed a pill. I went over and consulted my notes -- Zoe was a gray striped cat with white feet. There were two other gray cats with white feet -- but I didn't think either one of them was named Zoe. I had to text Zoe's dad to make sure I was finding the right cat. He told me where she might be hiding -- and once I found her I said "I don't think I've ever seen this cat!" Zoe was a good girl and she was glad I finally found her for some attention. :) Her downturn was sudden, and I know I didn't expect her family to lose her that quickly. Zoe, I am glad we met and I think of you.

I will always remember you, Lori (20Toes) - December 14, 2012

Pepper

Pepper

Pepper was the Queen of her home when I first met her a couple of years ago, as her new cat sitter. She was always in her spot on the bed, with five or so of her housemates around her. Being old, she had some health issues, and part of my job was to give her a pill. She was always great about it. In her final weeks she went blind and I'd find her curled up under the hollow of her cat steps to the bed. Once she realized I was there, she'd come out and somehow navigate her way to the kitchen to eat. Her favorite treat was a little dish of milk. Pepper, your home is not the same without you and I will always "see" you in your spot on the bed.

You are missed, Lori (20Toes) - December 14, 2012

Copper

In October of 1997 my husband and I adopted two brothers, Copper and Brass, from a Whiskers foster "mom". They quickly made our new house a real home, and convinced my husband cats were just as great pets as dogs. Over the past 15 years, Copper established himself as the alpha male of our eventual 4 cat and one child household. He was my husband and daughter's very favorite of all, and we were devastated when he died from heart failure on March 3, 2012. For the past 4 years, I donate monthly to Whiskers through SEFA at work, and we are now also helping another cat rescue group as fosters. We hope to share the joy of well adjusted kittens with others. Thank you, Whiskers. PS: Brass is still with us, and adjusting to his new role as King of the House.

Dutch and one of his many friends

Dutch was a scruffy stray we picked up one summer night in Schenectady. When offered a ride, he jumped right in the car without hesitation. Always an eager and adventurous fellow, he especially loved to take long rides in cars and meet new people. Eventually, Dutch stopped his wandering ways and settled down to be a wonderful companion. By the time he reached 60 in people years, he was beloved by all whose paths he crossed for his unfailing loyalty and devotion. Here’s to you Dutch!

Kitty was the best friend anyone could ask for. She was my first cat friend, a stray that someone dropped off near our house. Annabelle Lee

Forever loved...June 96 - March 09

Annabelle Lee belonged to a dear friend. She showed up on her doorstep as a young kitten and walked right into the house as if she belonged there. My friend had never had cats before but it wasn't long before Annabelle Lee had totally claimed her heart. This little cat would end up changing the course of my friend's life. She ended up becoming involved in cat rescue and also managing a feral colony for years. All because of Annabelle.

Sadly Annabelle came down with cancer and after fighting a valiant battle (she had such an indomitable spirit), she finally did succumb. Oh what a legacy she left behind though! So many cats have been saved because Annabelle chose just the right place to call home.

You are very missed Annabelle.

Callisto

Callisto

Callisto came to us from a friend, at a sad time in our lives ... she really helped us feel better. Callisto was mischievous and had a real attitude, but that just made us love her more. This cat slept on our shoulders and pillows, washed my hair every night, would growl if she was sitting on a lap at the computer and the lap-owner pushed in the keyboard drawer ... she knew that meant the lap was going to disappear! She'd run off in a huff, but be back a minute later, stealing a pen or sitting on a newspaper one of us might be trying to read.

Callisto died very suddenly. Alan saw her being her fluffly self one second, passed by Lori on his way upstairs from the basement, and when Lori got down the stairs Callisto was lying on the floor, dead. We were glad to have learned CPR for cats from the Red Cross, but no amount of CPR would bring her back.

So, here's to you, Fancy Pants. We really miss you and will remember you always. You were definitely one of a kind! Seven years was not as much time as we wanted to have with you, but we were glad for all we had.

Boston & Salem

In September 2008, my family adopted two 8-month old brothers named Boston and Salem. Despite the fact they were FeLV+ they made the most of each day, playing and being naughty. Salem passed quietly over Christmas 2008, and Boston passed on March 8th 2009. Their all-too-short lives were filled with happiness and contentment - we'll miss our naughty boys, but know they're probably causing mischief somewhere...

Zoe Bear and Oso Jax

Zoe and Oso loved the snow

Zoe and Oso were two magnificent Alaskan Malamutes full of energy and playful mischief.

Zoe was one of 11 puppies born in Brooklyn in the spring of 1994. My husband and I were moving back to our country home after a year in the city and we saw an ad for the puppies. We went to see them and for some reason we picked the puppy whose legs couldn't hold her up. The breeder assured us she was just a going to be a big dog and that she'd eventually learn to walk. We brought her back to our apartment where she could only crawl on the hardwood floors. The next day, we packed her in the front seat of the U-haul where she happily rode rode home like a perfect angel. Of course that didn't last long. True to her breed, she was willful and adventurous - but she smiled the whole time. (maybe she was laughing at us)

A couple of years later while on vacation in the state of Washington, we visited the breeder where Zoe's parents were born. We weren't really looking for another dog, but that's where we met Oso. He was returned at 1 1/2 years old due to a divorce in his family. There were 47 other dogs there, but our hearts were captured by Oso because he had that same silly grin on his face that Zoe had. Three weeks later, Oso arrived at the airport squeezed into a too-small dog crate. We barely knew him, but he was instantly part of the family (that included 7 cats). Zoe was only 135 lbs compared to Oso's 150, but she was ours first and he allowed her to be the boss - most of the time. But, even as adults, they always maintained their inner puppy.

Malamutes may be the perfect dog for cat lovers because they do what they want when they want to. Cat lovers can deal with that.

Sylvester

We love you Syl!

Sylvester was my first cat. I got him from a farmer when he was only 6 weeks old and he lived to be a ripe old 19 years! He was a real character... one of his favorite habits was collecting twist ties and adding them to his food bowl. We rarely removed his collection and he just ate around them. I still remember the time we had liver and onions for dinner... when we weren't looking he swiped a big hunk of the liver and put it in his food bowl. I guess he was going to feast on it later. We miss you and love you Syl. 4/20/1981 - 5/1/2000.

Fluffy

Fluffy and Me

Fluffy was my grandmother's cat when I was a child. She was the first cat I can remember. When I was 7 I asked my mom for a cat and I wanted to get one just like Fluffy.

Brennan

Brennan, precious boy

Brennan was a foster kitten who got dealt a bad deck in life. He seemed to be doing fine and growing up into a loving boy until he got to be about 6 months old. He started having problems and we couldn't figure out what was wrong for a long time. He stopped growing and lost weight. All this time he remained sweet and craved attention. Finally it was determined that he had FIP, a 100% fatal illness. We had to let him go in Jan 2008.
